Understanding Your Skin Barrier
Healthy skin is not defined by appearance alone, but by function.
At the center of this function lies the skin barrier — a highly specialized structure located in the outermost layer of the epidermis, the stratum corneum.
The stratum corneum is often described as a “brick and mortar” system.
The corneocytes act as the bricks, while intercellular lipids — mainly ceramides, cholesterol, and free fatty acids — form the mortar that keeps the structure intact.
This organization allows the skin to regulate water loss, defend against external irritants, and maintain a stable internal environment.
What Happens during a Professional Skin Treatment
A professional skin treatment is not defined by the products used, but by the way the skin is understood.
